 Laborde, Chas 1886-1941
Born in Buenos Aires to French parents, Charles Laborde returned to Paris to study art at the Academie Julien and the Ecole des Beaux Arts and at the age of 15 he was already selling his drawings to newspapers.
He fought in the Great War and was discharged in 1917. His war experience had, not surprisingly, left him with an acerbic take on the bourgeoisie and life in general, and this was reflected in his illustrations. Never as cruel as those of Georg Grosz, but painfully realistic views of the world and its characters.
Chas-Laborde, as he came to be known, traveled throughout Europe and to the United States and recorded his impressions in illustrations with accuracy and wit.
