 Rops, Felicien J.V. (1833-1898)
Born in Belgium and educated at the University of Brussels, Rops first established himself as a caricaturist before branching out into drawing, printmaking and painting in oils.
Rops worked with many authors, notably Baudelaire, Mallarme and Gautier, bringing their writing to life through his illustrations. He was closely associated with the literary movements of Decadence and Symbolism and his work often mingled sex, death and Satanic images.
